Summer course at La Perdrix

The course will include full instruction and all materials, wax, ceramic shell investment, burn out of wax’s, bronze, use of furnaces and safety gear (not boots) and preliminary chasing of the bronzes.

Detailed notes will be provided on’ backyard foundry’ techniques, furnace building, burners, crucibles, burn out kilns etc.

Provisional timetable

  Saturday 9th July. Arrive at La Perdrix, welcome meal, settling in, evening talk on Bronze.
  Sunday 10th July, Wax model making
  Monday 11th July, Wax model making, running systems and cups
  Tuesday 12th July. Instruction in Dipping shells. Excursion.
  Wednesday 13th July. Dipping shells, excursion.
  Thursday 14th July. Burn out shells,
  Friday 15th July. Pour bronze. Break our shells. Evening meal/ party.
  Saturday 16th July. Cut off runners and risers, chase. End of course

Andy Griffiths has been working in foundries for 27 years, for the last 16 years teaching foundry at the West Wales School of the Arts, since 2003 he has been building and running cast iron furnaces in the UK and USA and was co-chair of the 6th International Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art last summer.
He is particularly interested in back yard foundry techniques and received a grant from the Welsh Arts Council in 2006 to sail around Wales casting objects from found metal.
